Higher education policy in the UK
The British university, as in other European industrialized countries, was the first educational institution in the state. Other levels ofeducation, secondary education for example, were created later. An institution as old as British university has experienced a long evolution but It has never lost its essence.
In a goodbeginning, British universities were subsidized by private entities. It was not until 1889 where they received support from the Ministry of Economy. This action proved that the state wasinterested in higher education. This state contribution was necessary for the preservation of the new universities created by increased demand during the s. XIX. From 1904 it was decided tocreate a permanent character advisory committee to address issues related to state aid to colleges. This committee was UGC and it was finally implemented in 1919.
During the followingyears, the universities remained independent although they received state aid.
Once obtained the ultimate democratization of secondary education, the next challenge for education policy wasthe gradual democratization of higher education. The intention of this process was to achieve equality opportunities in British society.
These improvements were not made well. Afteryears of academic brilliance, the British university went into decline. During the economic crisis of the post-war, the British government under the education to get more students anddecreased financial aid. With less income, universities reduced their supply of degrees.
Currently the fees have increased but the level has also decreased.
the new system has brought debtand inflation in the degree, since the new qualifications are not equivalent to those before 1990 if we compare the capabilities and learning. They pay more for less quality
