Uso de ser y estar

SER or ESTAR both mean “to be” in English, but each is used for different purposes. SER and ESTAR are both in the infinitive form; however, when conjugated they are written differently.
For example• Conjugations of SER in present tense
Yo SOY (I am) / Tú ERES (You are)/ él- ella- usted - eso ES (he-she- you formal- it is) / nosotros SOMOS (we are)/ ellos- ustedes SON (they – you all are)
•The conjugations of ESTAR in present tense
Yo ESTOY (I am) / Tú ESTáS (you are) / él- ella- usted – eso ESTÁ (he – she – you formal- it is) / nosotros ESTAMOS (we are)/ ellos- ustedes ESTÁN (theyare).
When to use SER and when to use ESTAR
Uses of SER (learn the acronym: DOCTOR)
Date – Hoy ES 14 de junio (today is 14th of June) / La fiesta ES el sábado (the party is on Saturday)
Origin –Tú ERES de India (You are from India) / Yo SOY venezolana (I am venezuelan)
Characteristic – Vivek ES muy alto (Vivek is very tall)/ Ellos SON muy impacientes (they are very impatient); la flor ES roja(the flower is red)
Time - – ES la una de la tarde (it’s one in the afternoon) / SON las tres en punto (it’s 3 o’ clock)
Occupation – Vivek ES profesor de ciencias (Vivek is profesor of Science)/Obama ES el presidente de Estados Unidos (Obama is president of the United States).
Relationship – María ES hija de José (María is the daughter of José)/ el libro ES mío (the book is mine)
Uses ofESTAR (learn the acronym LACE)
Location - Yo ESTOY en mi casa ( I am in my home)/ Ustedes ESTÁN en la escuela (You all are in the school); el café ESTÁ en la mesa (the coffee is on the table)Action (here, ESTAR is always used in combination with another verb in gerund form) - Tú ESTÁS escribiendo (You are writing) / Nosotros ESTAMOS comiendo (we are eating).
Condition : El lápiz ESTÁ roto(the pencil is broken) ; la sopa ESTÁ fría (the soup is cold); los zapatos ESTÁN sucios (the shoes are dirty).
