Some of the headlines of the most popular newspapers in Honduras are: "Headless body found in a river", "Criminals kill engineer while he was leaving his house", "I was possessed by Lucifer, so I killed my father", and "Raped and murdered they find a child who was missing". Murder, kidnap, rape, and mutilation are common words in every of these newspapers.Sadly, there is a section especially for this in every paper. Reading the stories and watching the images is worse than watching a horror movie. Is this normal in Honduras? Sadly, yes!
After eighteenyears of living in Honduras, not much has gotten better. In fact, things have gotten worse as homicide rates have increased. In the 2011, the Global Study on Homicides from the United Nations Officeon Drugs and Crime explains "In Central America, homicide rates have increased in five out of eight countries in the last five year, with Honduras in particular seeing homicide rates more than doublebetween 2005 and 2010." No signs of improvement have appeared. This kind of violence is one that authorities cannot control, and since the authorities may be corrupt or simply fearful of the gangs whoare the main cause of the high criminal rates, official action does not occur.
Honduras is now amongst the most dangerous places on planet Earth. It is sad to read that my home country has suchterrible reputation. Such things cannot be hidden from or ignored by the Honduran population. We must stand up and ask that the world not ignore this, either. Consider this: for every one hundredthousand inhabitants, the intentional homicide rate is of 82.1. Again, 82.1 humans are killed INTENTIONALLY! For every one hundred thousand inhabitants, 82 die for senseless reasons.
