1. Short biography:
Alfred Lothar Wegener (Berlín, November 1st, 1880 – Groenlandia, November 2nd, 1930) he was a German meteorlogistand geophysical, who explained the bases to developed Plate Tectonics’ theory.
He took commission in astronomy and he got a doctorate in 1905. Since this year, he started to been interested inmeteorology.
2. Teoría que cambió la geología:
Propuso que inicialmente existía en la superficie de la Tierra un único continente, Pangea, el cual se habría partido durante la Era Secundaria(desde hace 290 millones de años hasta 50 millones de años) y sus fragmentos empezaron a moverse y dispersarse. Se denominó a este movimiento deriva continental.
Wegener argumentó que estos bloquescontinentales podían realizar movimientos verticales, como si fuesen bloques de corcho flotando en agua y movimientos horizontales deslizantes, siempre y cuando se ejerciera una fuerza suficientementefuerte.
Esa inmensa masa continental se habría fragmentado posteriormente en distintas direcciones hasta que se podían distinguir dos continentes: un supercontinente septentrional llamado Laurasia,y, al sur el supercontinente de Gondwana.

The main critical of Wegener were the geophysicists and geologists of the United States andEurope.
- The geophysicists criticized him because they affirmed that the necessary force for move tectonic masses was very high.
- The geologists didn´t know properly the rocks of the southhemisphere and they rejected and ridiculed his ideas.
50 years were necessary to used as base for more modern theories the continental displacements.
