Why is Eye Contact Important?
When we talk to other people we need to show respect and interest in the conversation. Making eye contact with the person that we are having the conversation withshows that we are interested in what that person has to say. If you look away and do not make eye contact with the person who is talking to you, he or she may think that you are not interested in theconversation. Also, eye contact shows that you respect that the person speaking, and it shows that they have your attention. It shows the speaker that that you as a listener understand what is being said.A few days ago, I did an experiment which consists of doing different actions while having a conversation with someone.
My first conversation was in the cafeteria with a friend. When I got there,I looked at the floor the whole time. I started to her, but I kept my eyes on the floor. The conversation lasted longer than 10 minutes when she asked if I was okay, and I said yes. Then she stoppedtalking to me and starts talking to people that where on the other side on the table. This was an awkward situation because she felt very uncomfortable with me. When she left the table, she said to me,“I hope you feel better”. I did not tell her that I was doing an experiment. After that, I felt bad because she probably thought I did not want to talk to her, but I think I would feel the same wayif someone did that to me.
My second experiment was to stare at the person’s nose during the conversation. I did this experiment on more than one person because the first person did not notice thatI was staring at his nose whole the time. I wanted to see if people would notice that I was staring at their noses while I was talking to them but nobody realized that I was looking at their noses.This was not an awkward experiment because most of them did not notice. I feel that it was more of an issue about focusing for me because I did not pay attention when they were talking. I only thought...
