According to the author this article is about how genomes can be related to the addiction of smoking. A recent study of 289 smokers and 233 non-smokers revealed that people whocarry the allele 9 of the dopamine transporter gene are more prone to be smokers and the ones who don’t. Also, other results in the study proved that this genotype is associated with smoking risk, age at smoking initiation, and the ability to quit smoking.
Dean Hamer, from the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD, USA, and his co-workers studied smoking behavior, personality traits innon-smokers, current smokers and former smokers. They said people with allele 9 were more likely to given up to smoking than those without it. These investigators also said there is evidence that proves that this genotype helps to prevent people to start smoking and stay hooked.

The plan began in November 21 when the author finally got the consent of the principal and then proposed his plan toall the fourth grade teachers. He shared real information and statistics to the teachers so the teachers could share them too with all their students. Each teacher would receive a timer and enough Chinese finger traps for their class. The finger traps were to keep thestudents occupied meanwhile they were standing outside. A timer was set to go off every 30 minutes, at which time the students would have to go out with their finger traps. For 5 minutes, the students stood outside the school. This standing time was one point in the day when teachers shared some of the statistics he gave about effects, costs, health and some consequences of smoking. After 5 minutes thestudents came back to the class and explained their work. The teachers hold in contempt to show a popular movie at the end of the day and leave it running during the time they were outside. As result of the study the majority of the students got the message. They said that “going outside every 30 minutes to smoke was a waste of time” and also they commented that they learned from this experiment tonever smoke.
