A Little About Climate Type Called "The Mist"

Fog
The fog is a group of ice crystals suspended in the air. The term "fog" is typically distinguished from the more generic term "cloud" that is a low fog, and humidity of the fog is often generated locally, for example, in a swamp or in cities where the temperature is very low. Fog is distinguished from mist only by its density; the Fog reduces visibility to less than 1 km, where as mistreduces visibility to no less than 1 km.
The foggiest place in the world is the Grand Banks off the island of Newfoundland the meeting place of the cold Labrador Current from the north and the much warmer Gulf Stream from the south. Some of the foggiest land areas in the world include Argentina, Newfoundland, and California, each with over 200 foggy days per year.
Even in southern Europe, the fog isoften located in the lowlands and valleys, such as the lower Po Valley and the Arno, Tiber valleys in Italy or Ebro Valley in northeastern IBERIA, as well as the Swiss plateau, especially in the Seeland area, in late autumn and winter.
Characteristics
* The fog forms when the difference between temperature and dew point is generally less than 2.5 °C.
* The fog begins to form whenwater vapor condenses into tiny liquid water droplets in the air.
* Water vapor normally begins to condense on condensation nuclei such as dust, ice, and salt in order to form clouds.
* The fog, is a stable cloud deck which tends to form when a cool, stable air mass is trapped underneath a warm air mass
* The fog normally occurs at a relative humidity near 100%.This can be achieved byeither adding moisture to the air or dropping the ambient air temperature.
* Fog can form suddenly, and can dissipate just as quickly, depending on what side of the dew point is the temperature. This phenomenon is known as flash fog.
* Sea fog is a peculiar effect due to salt. On the ocean surface, the most common particles are salt spray, salt produced by waves.
* Condensation on thesalt particles has been found to occur under moist conditions as low as 70%. So the fog can occur even in the air, in relatively dry places, such as the California coast.
* The fog usually produces precipitation as drizzle or very light snow. The drizzle is produced when the humidity reaches 100% mist. This can occur when the fog layer is lifted, or when compressed by force from above. Thelight rain is formed when the surface temperature falls below freezing point.
Types of Fog
* The radiation fog
It is a way for the cooling of the land after sunset by thermal radiation in calm conditions with clear sky. The cool ground produces condensation in the nearby air by heat conduction. In perfect calm the fog layer can be less than a meter deep but turbulence can promote a thickerlayer. Radiation fogs occur at night, and usually do not last long after sunrise, though can persist all day in the winter months especially in areas bounded by high ground.
* The Ground fog
Is fog that obscures less than 60% of the sky and does not extend to the base of any overhead clouds However, the term is sometimes used to refer to radiation fog.
* The Advection fog
It occurs when moistair passes over a cold surface. It is most common at sea when tropical air encounters cooler waters, including areas of cold water upwelling, such as along the California coast.
* Frozen fog (also known as ice fog)
Is a type of fog, where the droplets were frozen very small ice crystals in air. In general, this requires a temperature at or below -35 ° C, so it is common and only near theArctic and Antarctic.
* The Hail fog
Sometimes occurs in the vicinity of significant hail accumulations due to decreased temperature and increased moisture leading to saturation in a very shallow layer near the surface. It most often occurs when there is a warm, humid layer atop the hail and when wind is light. It may form shortly after the hail falls; when the hail has had time to cool the...
