Subject: MR Physics Training (KSpace) In the past three emails we have looked at RF excitation and slice selection, Frequency encoding and Phase encoding. With these basics we can now begin to visualize howwe create images in MRI. When discussing advanced pulse sequences, or what can go wrong with them, it is convenient to consider the physics in terms of how the echo signalsare formed and acquired. This is the theory we call "K-space". By using a this model we can better understand how advanced techniques fill K-space, don't fill them, or howwe can resort the acquisition to complete the required K-space.

K-Space Theory Below, I am providing a link to an awesome online tutorial on K-space. It was written usingsimple terms, is easy to understand and has some excellent graphic demonstrations that will help you easily grasp this theory. It will only take about 10 or 15 minutes to gothrough the whole thing on broadband. If you continue on in the tutorial to the "How K-space Works" section, there is a review of FFTs and the spatial encoding techniquesthat were discussed in the past few weeks with some nice demonstrations. Pay special attention to the section on phase encoding. Here's the link:http://www.revisemri.com/tutorials/what_is_k_space_files/fullscreen.htm

I highly recommend viewing this tutorial at your leisure. We will want to apply these concepts in future discussions.
