The Air Mobility Command (AMC), whichalong the Military Sealift Command (MSC), the Joint Enabling Forces Command (JEFC), and the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) is an integral part of the United StatesTransportation Command (USTRANSCOM) (U.S. Transportation Command, 2010). Its mission is to “provide global air mobility…right effects, right place, right time” (Air Mobility Command, 2012).
AMC was activatedon June 1, 1992 as a major command of the United States Air Force when the Military Airlift Command (MAC) and the Strategic Air Command (SAC) were inactivated. Elements of those two organizations,MAC’s worldwide airlift system and SAC’s KC-10 and KC-135 tanker force, combined to form AMC. It is headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. AMC provides major cargo and passenger delivery, airrefueling and aeromedical evacuation. The command also transports humanitarian supplies to hurricane, flood and earthquake victims both at home and around the world. To help achieve these objectives,the command is composed of about 134,000 personnel. These include active duty, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and Department of Defense (DOD) civilians. As far as the organizational structureis concerned, the command has one numbered air force, 16 wings, two airlift groups and smaller associated units.
Through the use of major cargo platforms such as the C-17 Globemaster III, the C-5Galaxy, and the C-130 Hercules AMC is able to deploy American armed forces anywhere in the world and keep them supplied. Additionally, during national emergencies long-range airlift aircraft areavailable through the Civil Relief Air Fleet, a fleet of commercial aircraft committed to support the transportation of military forces and material in time of crisis.
