My name is Aleska Nowak. I am 51 years old, and this is my family: He is my son “Leo Nowak”, he is 26 years old. He is my brother “DarwinLewandowski”, he is 53 years old. She is my sister in law “Rocio Lewandowski”, she is 50 years old, and she is my niece “Carolina Lewandowski”, she is 25years old.

We are from Poland. We speak Polish and English. We came to the United States in 1891. The life in Poland was difficult. There werepoverty, unemployment, and official discrimination aimed at Catholics. We felt worried because we are Catholics, and we couldn’t express our religious beliefs. Ilost my husband Tomazs Nowak six months before we left Poland. My economic situation was bad. These factors made me take a decision to immigrate to theU.S.

My son was 1 year old when we arrived to Ellis Island immigration station in New York on September 15, 1891. My brother, my son, and I moved toMinnesota. We rented a house while my brother waited for his wife, who arrived a few months later than us.

I started to take English classes at theCatholic church near by my house in the morning. My son was always with me, but I used to leave him with my brother at night because I had to work at thefactory. I learned to sew at the factory, and with my new skills I began my own business at home. My business in growing fast, it makes me feel calm because Iam going to give my son a better future.

It was really dificult start all over again, but in the United States we found the posibility to meet our goals.
