This edition of the play is intended to be a reliable edition but is, under no circumstances, to be considered as a thorough critical edition complete with variant readings, extensive notes, nor any of the valuable expository discussion that is usually found in such. Those who would like to study the play or to comment on it with greater security than canbe claimed for this electronic edition should refer to a modern critical edition of the work, that by Francisco Ayala published in Madrid in 1971 by Clásicos Castalia. A reliable English translation of the play is found in The Bashful Man at Court..., as translated by Fiorigio Minelli and J. D. Browning, published in Ottawa by Dovehouse Editions in 1991. The play was also performed in Englishtranslation at the ASiglo de Oro@ Festival at El Chamizal National Memorial in 1993 by the ATroupe Texas@ from Austin, TX. The translation and the direction were the work of Harley Erdman. A video tape of that performance is in found in the AHCT video collection. El vergonzoso en palacio has also been the subject of many studies that have been published since these two editions were prepared. Salen el DUQUE de Avero, viejo, y el CONDE de Estremoz, de caza DUQUE: De industria a esta espesura retirado vengo de mis monteros,que siguiendo un jabalí ligero, nos han dado el lugar que pedís; aunque no entiendo con qué intención, confuso y alterado. os dará la respuesta enbreve suma. De lengua al agraviado caballero ha de servir la espada, no la pluma que muda dice a voces vuestra mengua. Echan mano DUQUE: Lengua es la espada, pues parece lengua; y pues con ella estáis, y así os provoca a dar quejas de mí, puesto que en vano, refrenando las lenguas de la boca, hablen solas las lenguas de la mano si la ocasión que os doy, que será poca para ese enojo pococortesano, a que primero la digáis no os mueve; pues mi valor ningún agravio os debe. (Bueno es que así disimuléis los daños que contra vos el cielo manifiesta! )Qué daños, conde? Si en los largos años de vuestra edad prolija, agora apresta, duque de Avero, excusas, no hay engaños que puedan convencerme. La respuesta que me pedís, ese papel la afirma con vuestro sello, vuestra letra y firma.
