I believe that one of the most important events in the historyof my country was the election of Raul Alfonsin as president in 1983. It is such a meaningful event because those elections were the first democratic ones after years of a government of militarsthrough a dictatorship.
Argentina has a really dark chapter in its history; from 1976 to 1983 a military government, who had taken the power in an illegay way, ruled every single aspect in the lifeof argentinian people. The members of the “Junta Militar” were evils characters and those were really frightnening times. Thousands of persons were tortured and killed, and many others justdisappeared; no one knows what happened with them because their remains have not been found yet. Besides, that government was the responsible for the Malvina´s/ Faulker Island´s War between Argentina and theUnited Kingdom; they are the responsible for the death of hundreds of soldiers in that territory. Actually, this war and its results contributed to the end of the military government in my country.In 1983, the Junta decided to hold democratic elections for the first time in years; Raul Alfonsin, the candidate from the Radical Party won the election and became the first democratically chosenpresident in years in a country signed by several putsches. He had an enormous responsibility which consisted in leading the argentinians into the transition to a democratic era. It was a really toughjob because both the economic and the society of the country was harshly damaged by the past experience. Moreover, there were lots of resentful militars in the picture and it was necessary to controland judge them for their crimes against the people. Besides, international organisms were reluctant to trust in Argentina after the past events.
