Kingdom of Ghana
Accomplishments:
* The earliest of the West African states to develop was Ghana.

* The Empire grew rich from the trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt.

* Theintroduction of the camel, brought about a big change in trade.

Daily Life:
* The people were farmers and miners and artists.
* They made the most wonderful fabrics.
* Using mud to makedesigns on dyed cloth and set in the sun made mud cloth.
* They had fresh fruit and sweet potatoes.
* They had the Niger River, which provided water for farming, washing, and bathing, and fishand waterfowl to eat.
* They worked very hard, but their life was good.

Location & Population:
The Ghana Empire was located in what now is southeastern Mauritania, and western Mali.
Ithad an area of around 1,600 km2.

Religion:
* Nobles - Many gods and goddesses
* Common People - Many gods and goddesses
Decline:
* It is difficult to determine when and how Ghanadeclined and fell.
Ghana fell when it was sacked by the Almoravid movement in 1076.

Kingdom of Mali

Accomplishments:

* Mali began as one of the districts in the Kingdom ofGhana. * Around 1230 CE, Ghana collapsed and Mali took over. * Mali controlled some of the gold mines to the south and some of the salt mines in the north.Daily Life: * The people were happy.* The common people worked very hard. * Nobles were more comfortable. * Everyone made time for music & art.Location and Population: * It is located on the West Africa. |
Religion:
*Religious Freedom
* Nobles were Muslims
* Common People had traditional african religion with gods and goddesses.

Decline:
* Around 1610, Mahmud IV died.

* No single personever ruled Manden after Mahmud IV's death, resulting in the end of the Mali Empire.
