THE WHITE SHARK

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a species of elasmobranch Lamniformes Lamnidae family found in warm and temperate waters of most oceans. This species is the onlyone that survives today of the genus Carcharodon.

General characteristics
White sharks are characterized by their fusiform body and great strength, in contrast to the flattened forms that oftenlook like other sharks. The snout is conical, short and thick. The mouth, very large and rounded, has an arc or parabola. Always remains slightly open, showing at least one row of teeth of the upper jawand one or two of the bottom, while the water gets inside and out continuously through the gills. If this flow to stop, the shark will suffocate for lack of operculum to regulate the water rightstep, and would sink in it, because by not having swim bladder is not doomed to be constantly moving to avoid it.

Distribution
White sharks live on the continental shelf areas near the coasts, wherewater is shallow. It is in these areas where the abundance of light and sea currents generated a higher concentration of animal life, which for this species amounts to more food.

Size
The mostfrequent length among adult white sharks is from 4 to 7 meters (males smaller than females), although cases have been cited for outstanding individuals who went far beyond these measures. At presentthere is no guarantee what really is the size cap "or maximum in this species, a fact reinforced by the existence of old notes and unreliable truly gigantic animal. Several of these cases are discussed inthe book The Great White Shark (1991) by Richard Ellis and John E. McCosker, both experts on sharks.

ENDANGERED
Given the wide range of distribution of this species, it is impossible to know howmany white sharks there are, even approximately. However, its low population density, coupled with their low reproductive rate, long childhood and low life expectancy mean that the white shark is...
