Ahh, Mexico. Who would’ve thought us mexicans were to be judged asracists? I feel that black people in the USA have come a long way in fighting racism… and have succesfully eliminated the use of words such as “the ‘N’ word”, and now they have succesfully turned it all into ‘communities’ 1 (#amr01).

e.g. The ‘african-american community’, the ‘latin/hispanic community’, and… you know the rest… It’s funny to see the ‘united statesians’ 2 (#amr02) strive to keepracism to the minimum when they acknowledge differences by categorizing people by ethnicity and race 3 (#amr03). Now, obviously, mexicans and united statesians don’t see black people under the same light 4 (#amr04). Mestizos and blacks in Mexico received the same treatment from spaniards some hundreds of years ago 5 (#amr05), until Mexico acquired its independence. In the U.S. of A., black vs.white issues kept on going until relatively ‘recent’ years. Ethnicity and race seem to not matter if you are of Mexican nationality. That is why no one will raise an eyebrow when they hear a person shouting “oye mi negro” to a black guy… in Mexico. As a side note, I’ve often been called ‘güero’ by servicemen at gas stations… then again I don’t think I’m a blond, having black hair… Racism 6 (#amr06)is about the beleif of inequality among races. Therefore a racist person would beleive that a person whose color is different than his, would behave in a different way than he does. Then again, what is normal? Are all black people rappers? Although black rappers are, perhaps, a majority… good rappers need not always be black 7 (#amr07). I don’t dislike rap music, but I strongly feel it’s a bit toomuch about being a showoff. Nowadays, you don’t get to read much about humble rappers. “You be lucky getting some caps busted in yo ass”, if you’re lucky. In some cases, if black people don’t act “hip n’ cool”, they’re accused of ‘acting white’ 8 (#amr08). Are black people nowadays too defensive about their culture? 9 (#amr09) All these open questions will be answered in time, but they’ve beenraised because the Mexican Postal Service issued some controversial stamps which depicted an exaggerated black character 10 (#amr10). This mexican comic book character, called “Memín Pinguín”, is still being published today, and has been popular in countries like Columbia, Venezuela or Costa Rica… which have a considerably higher black population than Mexico. Although Memín Pinguín’s stamps havereceived harsh criticism from united statesian TV, it is clear that Memín Pinguín comes from a time where the USA was still racist, and Mexico had long forgotten the differences of colors in skin 11 (#amr11) Then again, this things won’t be happening anymore, in about 300 years from now… Do you know why? There won’t be any more white people. There also won’t be any more black people 12 (#amr12).References
