Currently the country is managed by Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner predecessor of Nestor Kirchen (25 May 2003 – 10 December 2007), herhusband. Formerly Argentina has had very important advances in different presidential periods.
* Roque Saenz Peña created the Sáenz Peña Law sanctioned in February 10 1912 which enacted secret ballot, universal and mandatory suffrage for males and this allowed their traditional rivals, the centrist Radical Civic Union, to win the country's first free elections in 1916.
* President HipólitoYrigoyen enacted social and economic reforms and extended assistance to family farmers and small business.
* In 1946 General Juan Peron was elected president and created a movement called the Peronism. Through his period women’s suffrage was granted in 1947.
After a period of political violence Peron returned and died that same year (July 1974) so he left his third wife Isabel, the Vicepresident to succeed him in the office. She was thrown out in a coup de état in 1976. After this the country entered in the DIRTY WAR, in this war a very important event took place in Argentina. Due to the war many people disappeared the affected Argentine mothers created an association called Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo. The military has admitted that over 9,000 of those kidnapped are stillunaccounted for, but the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo say that the number is closer to 30,000, 500 of those given to military related families and the remaining number dead. The numbers are hard to determine due to the secrecy surrounding the abductions. Three of the founders of the mothers of the Plaza de Mayo have also "disappeared". After the fall of the military regime, a civilian government commissionput the number of disappeared at close to 11,000. This manifestation was very strong and cried out for the defense of human rights and like many other countries military power and authorities barely heard the voices of these women because it wasn’t of their interest.
