A new method for understanding a property of mathematical groups, defined in the1960s
A group is one of the simplest algebraic structures: it is a set with an operation that satisfies a series of properties (for example, the set of integers with the sum of numbers). The generality ofthe definition makes it possible for it to be applied to many situations, and therefore it is particularly interesting to understand it theoretically.
In addition to the basic properties, groups existthat satisfy other extra properties as well as providing special characteristics. In the second half of the 1960s, mathematician David Kazhdan introduced the property (T) to demonstrate a veryimportant result of fundamental groups. Various applications for algebraic groups were subsequently discovered, in ergodic theory, in operator algebras and in computational science, which stimulated moreinterest in understanding the property. Now, a team of researchers, a member of which is Andrei Jaikin-Zapirain, (UAM-ICMAT), has hit upon a new method for demonstrating the property (T) in discretegroups. This result was published last Monday in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences”.
“Our method enables the property (T) to be demonstrated for many new examples that untilnow were unattainable,” says Jaikin-Zapirain. This work contributes to a better understanding of the groups. As this UAM-ICMAT researcher points out: “It is expected that the new groups with theproperty (T) that appear in our article may constitute a basis for answering some open questions about operator algebras.”
