GEORGE SIMON OHM

Georg Simon Ohm fue un físico y matemático alemán que aportó a la teoría de la electricidad la Ley de Ohm, conocido principalmente por su investigación sobre las corrientes eléctricas. Estudió la relación que existe entre la intensidad de una corriente eléctrica, su fuerza electromotriz y la resistencia, formulando en 1827 la ley que lleva su nombre.
Nacióen 1788 en Erlangen, Baviera, el seno de una pequeña familia protestante (En esa época, parte del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico). Su padre Johann Wolfgang Ohm era cerrajero y su madre fue Maria Elizabeth Beck. A pesar de no ser gente educada, su padre era un autodidacta y le dio a sus hijos una excelente educación a partir de sus propias enseñanzas.
Pero el 11 de septiembre de 1817 recibe una gran oportunidad comomaestro de matemáticas y física en el Liceo Jesuita de Colonia, escuela mejor que cualquier otra en la que Ohm había podido enseñar, puesto que incluso contaba con su propio y bien equipado laboratorio de física. Ohm aceptó, y con ello prosiguió sus estudios en matemáticas leyendo los trabajos de matemáticos punteros franceses en la época, como Laplace, Lagrange, Legendre, Biot y Poisson así comolos de Fourier y Fresnel.
Pero no solamente fue la electricidad lo que Ohm decidió investigar en su vida. También en 1843 declara el principio fundamental de la acústica fisiológica, debido a su preocupación por el modo en que uno escucha combinaciones de tonos. Pero esta vez se equivocaba, pues sus hipótesis no tenían una base matemática lo suficientemente sólida y la breve vida de su hipótesisacabó en una disputa con otro físico llamado August Seebeck, el cual desacreditó su teoría y al final Ohm tuvo que reconocer su error. A pesar de esto la investigación de Ohm sobre acústica en este ámbito se resume asi:
«Al estar expuestos a un sonido complejo creado al mezclar varios tonos, los individuos son capaces de escuchar por separado cada tono.»
Finalmente en 1849 Ohm acepta un puestoen Múnich como conservador del gabinete de Física de la "Bayerische Akademie" y empieza a dar conferencias en la Universidad de Múnich. Y es en 1852, que culmina Ohm la ambición de toda una vida: la de ser designado a la cátedra de física de la Universidad de Múnich.
