Quentin Tarantino is a director , writer and actor. He was born on March 27 1963 in Knoxville Tennesse. He was the child of Connie Mc Hugh a health care executive and nurse ,and Tony Trantino an actor and amateur musician. His parents got separated before his birth.
When he was four years old he moved toCalifornia with his mother. There he attended Narbonne high school, but he dropped out at age 16. He attended acting school at the James Best Theatre Company in Toluca Lake.
At age 22 he worked at a video store in Manhattan Beach, where he spent all day discussing cinema and recommending videos to costumers. He worked there with Roger Avary, which with him worked with some ideas and scripts.Tarantino met Lawrence Bender and encourage him to write a screenplay .He directed and co-wrote My Best friend’s Birthday in 1987. The final reel of the film was almost fully destroyed in a lab fire that occurred during editing. Later this script formed the bases for True Romance.
In 1990 Tarantino left the video store to work for CINETEL a production company. He met there a producer whom got hisTrue Romance script in hands of director Tony Scott. Scott liked it and bought he rights to it.
Because of his friendship with producer Lawrence Bender he was able to fund his directorial debut Reservoir Dogs in 1992 for he had also written the script. Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, and Tarantino himself formed the cast. Reservoir Dogs participated on Sundance Film Festival whichTarantino received not such a good response, but this Festival helped him become one of the most talked about figures in Hollywood. The movie didn’t do so well in the states but it became a popular title in video and outside the United States.
In 1994 he filmed Pulp Fiction an unpredictable film filled with violence and pop culture. This movie was developed in two stories; one was John Travolta asVincent Vega and his partner Samuel L. Jackson as Jules Winnfield, two hit men that worked for a very powerful man. The second storyline involved Bruce Willis as a boxer, which got in trouble for not loosing a fight that was arranged before. Pulp Fiction became a success with both the critics and the audience. He earned over $108 million at the box office. This movie won the Palm de ´Or for best filmand earned 7 Oscar Nominations, which include best film and best director. He took home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. This same year Tarantino sold his second script Natural Born Killers, to director Oliver Stone. Tarantino didn’t like so much what Stone did with his script because he didn’t liked the fact that Stone chance some parts of the script.
In 1995 Tarantino wrote and directedone of the stories in the movie Four Rooms, the other three were directed by other rising independent filmmakers Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell and Robert Rodriguez. After the release of four rooms Tarantino and Rodriguez worked together in 1996 on the movie From Dusk Till Dawn. Tarantino wrote the screenplay and played a small role as George Clooney’s brother. Rodriguez directed the film. Thefilm received very bad reviews.
In 1997 Tarantino wrote and directed Jackie Brown a crime thriller movie that told the story of a flight attendant who gets caught smuggling her boss` gun money on the airline she works for. The cast includes Robert De Niro, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Keaton. The film was well received by the critics, however filmmaker Spike Lee objected Tarantino´s overusedderogatory term for African Americans in Jackie Brown publicity.
After Jackie Brown Tarantino took a break on filmmaking and did some stage work on Broadway in a revival of Wait until Dark with Marissa Tomei.
