Comparative essay:
The help & Madam and her madam
The Help is an original novel written by Kathryn Stockett and it teaches us how people in the 1950’s behave. There is a lot of denigration andsegregation in this movie because we can see how black people had to do and what white people did to them. Madam and her madam is a poem written by Langston Hughes that tells us a part of the lifebetween a rich woman and her servant which would be “her madam”. Both pieces concern the help and the effects they had on society. I will analyze the irony that both pieces have.
The excerpt from The Helpcontains irony because Hilly is making Aibileen say something she doesn’t want to, that denigrates her. Also because she starts complementing her saying that she makes “the best colored coffee intown”, which also states irony because Aibileen is an African- American. Also by the way Hilly said that they made a bathroom just for her and the way Skeeter thinks “please don’t say thank you” tells usthat Hilly is making Aibileen say something that may denigrate her or make her feel inferior this is the narrator’s personal opinion about the situation. This is a way of implicit writing because itdoesn’t tell us literally the purpose it has, we have to read it, and analyze it. For example when he says by details all the work she had in the house, the twelve- room house to clean, dinner, etc. Wealso know the name of the servant, Alberta. He uses irony at the end of the poem by saying “I love you” and “I love you so”.
Skeeter’s point of view in this excerpt is in Aibileen’s side, becauseshe doesn’t want her to be denigrated or segregated. In madam and her madam we can see the difference of social statuses between the rich and the poor and the servant and the employer. Langston...
