[98] XCVIII. IPHIGENIA
When Agamemnon with his brother Menelaus and chosen leaders of * Asia were goint to
Troy to recover Helen, wife of Menelaus, whom Alexander Paris ahd carried off, a storm
kept them at Aulis because of the anger of Diana. Agamemnon had wounded a deer of hers
in hunting, and had spoken rather haughtily against Diana. When he had called togetherthe
soothsayers, and Calchas had declared that he could expiate in no other way than by
sacrificing his daughter, Iphigenia, Agamemnon at first refused. Then Ulysses by his advice
won him over to a fine scheme. The same Ulysses along with Diomede was sent to get
Iphigenia, and when he came to Clytemnestra her mother, he falsely said she was to be
given in marriage to Achilles. When she was brought toAulis, and her father was about to
sacrifice her, Diana pitied the girl, cast mist about her, and substituted a deer in her place.
She bore Iphigenia through the clouds to the Tauric land, and there made her a priestess of
her temple.

Por eso los helenos, excitados á la guerra, tomaron las armas, viniendo aquí, al estrecho de
Aulide, provistos de naves, de escudos, de numerosos caballos y carros, y por
consideración á Menelao me eligieron para estratega, á mí, que soy su hermano. ¡Pluguiera
á los Dioses que se hiciese este honor á otro que á mí! Reunido y congregado el ejército,
permanecimos aquí, en Aulide, sin podernavegar. En esta incertidumbre, el adivinador
Calcas [90] ordena que Ifigenia, á quien he engendrado, sea sacrificada á Artemisa, que
habita esta tierra; declara que nuestra navegación y la ruina de los frigios dependen de este
sacrificio, y que nada de eso sucederá si no la sacrificamos. Al oír estas palabras, ordené á
Taltibio que despidiese á todo el ejército con una proclama solemne, pues jamás seobtendría de mí que matara á mi hija. Pero, al fin, mi hermano, con toda clase de palabras,
me ha persuadido á realizar este acto horrible.

the altar beside the neighboring plane-tree, in which there was a nest; and having consumed
the eight sparrows in thenest, together with the mother bird, which made the ninth, it was
turned to stone. Calchas said that this sign was given them by the will of Zeus, and he
inferred from what had happened that Troy was destined to be taken in a period of ten
