Test Equipment and Supplies
In this section, we have consolidated andlisted all of the equipment required for the IPM procedures contained in this manual. Each procedure lists the necessary test apparatus and supplies. In some cases, alternative devices or methods are available; additional equipment may be required for some acceptance tests. Below, we provide an extensive equipment list, as well as an extensive listing of commercial sources of test equipment andsupplies derived from the Health Devices Sourcebook. In addition, this section includes material that will assist those performing IPM procedures. Construction details are provided for users who want to put together their own temperature probe simulator, temperature Monitoring device, or aortic simulator. Also included are temperature and pressure conversion tables and a pressure conversion graph.One or more tool kits (tool kits for various applications [e.g., repair of electronic devices] are available) Although seldom used, an oxygen analyzer should be available; it may be possible to borrow one from the respiratory therapy department. An oscilloscope would also be helpful. The equipment list in this section contains all of the equipment needed to perform ECRI's IPM procedures. Severalpieces of test equipment (e.g., function generators) are used only for acceptance testing. Others may be optional, but are included because they provide greater flexibility or are more efficient to use. For instance, flow accuracy determinations can be assessed more quickly with an infusion analyzer than if calculated from measurements gathered using a graduated cylinder and stopwatch. Several ofthe IPM procedures in this manual provide an extensive description of specialized and expensive test devices. For example, see the discussions of multipurpose and Doppler ultrasound phantoms and of radiometers in the procedures for ultrasound scanners and phototherapy units, respectively. Some instruments have multiple functions. For example, an electrical safety analyzer may include a leakagecurrent meter, a ground resistance ohmmeter, and an isolation test supply; a pneumatic tester or pressure meter can take the place of numerous pressure and vacuum gauges; and probes and transducers can be used with some digital voltmeters for performing temperature and pressure measurements. Thus, we recommend that each hospital review its needs before purchasing equipment. In addition to the equipmentlisted in this section, each CE department usually requires other tools, equipment, and supplies for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing certain brands or types of devices in the hospital. Cleaning agents and lubricants are discussed separately in Section 1.9, Preventive Maintenance and Cleaning. Decontamination supplies and personal protective devices and supplies should be available formechanical, infection control, and special requirements (see Section 1.8, IPM Safety).

Basic test equipment
The type and quantity of test and repair equipment required for a clinical engineering (CE) department depends on the type of equipment in the hospital and the responsibilities delegated to the department. Almost every CE department requires certain basic pieces of equipment,...
