Chapter 26: Knights and Squires

1) Summary:

Knights and Squires is a sequence covers two different chapters, number 26 and 27. In number 26 we see right at the beginning the introduction ofStarbuck, the first mate of the Pequod. He is a strong and healthy man from Nantucket whose main purpose in the ship is to work to gain money, not for pleasure. He is a very rational person with veryclear ideas. After Starbuck's description, physically and internally as if the narrator was in his own mind, Ishmael who is the narrator of the chapter, begins a kind of monologue related to thedignity of the workers, praying for equality to a democratic God who had made champions from the common people. Ishmael discusses himself the idea of being an important person even though your roots arepoor or you have to deal with different problems.

2) References:

In this chapter we can see two important references of place. Both of them are related to Massachusetts. The first one isNantucket which is in the coast and the other is Cape which stands for Cape Cop, in the north of Nantucket. We also found Quaker which is a community inside Nantucket too.

At the end of the chapter,some important names are mentioned:
. Bunyan: refers to the English preacher John Bunyan (1628-1688). While imprisoned for “preaching without a license”, he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, an allegoricalnovel about an everyman's journey to heaven that is one of the most widely read works in the English language.
. Cervantes: it stands for Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). He was a Spanish playwright,author of Don Quijote”. He lost his left arm fighting the Ottoman Turks in the battle of Lepanto.
. Andrew Jackson: he was the seventh president of the United States (1829-1837), born into humblecircumstances. He was orphaned by age 14, but later became a hero of the war of 1812.
