SEPARATION PROCESSES

OBJECTIVE
Make different separation processes to know the compounds of mixtures and acquire needed criteria to select the best separationprocess to each substance.

PROBLEM
How can you determine which is the best separation process to each mixture?
Which characteristics are needed to know for separate a mixture?

PROCEDURE
Experiment 1
Material: 2 beakers, water, sand.
Procedure:
1. Mix water and sand in a beaker.
2. Let it rest until sand sediment.
3. Carefully put the water of themixture in the other beaker, trying to separate the mixture.
4. Explain how was possible to separate the mixture.

Experiment 2
Material: 1 tripod, 1 separatory funnel, 1 beaker, water, oil.Procedure:
1. Put the water and oil in the separatory funnel and mix.
2. Shake.
3. Let it rest a few minutes.
4. Open the key until the mixture separates.
5. Explain how was possible to separatethe mixture?

Experiment 3
Material: Porcelain capsule, bunsen burner, tripod, asbesto grid, beaker,
water, salt.
Procedure:
1. Dissolve salt in water in a beaker
2. Put a little amountof the mixture in the porcelain capsule and heat until it boils and evaporates totally.
3. When the residue gets dry, explain what happened with the mixture.

Experiment 4
Material: Universalsupport with ring, 2 beakers, 1 funnel, filter paper, coal dust, water.
Procedure:
1. Mix coal dust with water in a beaker.
2. Put the funnel over the ring, and a beaker down the funnel
3.Put the filter paper on the funnel.
4. Pour the mixture on the funnel.
5. Explain what happened.

Experiment 5
Material: Beaker, porcelain capsule, tripod, Bunsen burner, asbestos grid,Naphthalene, coal dust, water, ice.
Procedure:
1. Prepare a mixture of naphthalene and coal dust and put on a beaker.
2. In the porcelain capsule pour water with ice.
