THE TSAR’S RULE
The empire was ruled by an autocracy. The Tsar had the absolute power to rule. He could take decisions without consulting anyone else. He was loyal to his family; he worked hard andpaid attention to detail. Nicholas avoided making important decisionsand personally answered letters from peasants. He felt threatened by some talented ministers. He alsoappointed family members and friends from the court to important positions. His government was corrupt.There were local governors appointed by the Tsar. Russia was a police state controlled by local governors.
OPPOSITION
It consisted in 3groups. The liberals or “Cadets” wanted a democracy in Russia. The other 2 groups believed that revolution was the answer to people’s troubles. TheSocialists Revolutionaries were radicals. The aim was to hand the huge estates of the nobility to the peasants. They were violent and had wide support in towns.The Socialist Democratic Party was a smaller but more disciplined group whichfollowed the ideas of Karl Marx. In 1903 they split into Bolsheviks (believed that Russia was not ready for a revolution) and Mensheviks. Both were illegal.By 1903 Russia was close to a revolution.
