INTRODUCTION

There are many techniques that have been created to make classes more participative and can be used to create an interactive atmosphere. However, there are always some students that keep silence. They don’t participate actively in classes. The purpose of this study is to identify how type ofpersonality and motivation affect student’s participation in French Literature I at their fourth year of the major of Modern languages at the Foreign Language Department, University of El Salvador, semester II, 2011.

Personality is an important factor that determines student’s participation; it basically depends on which type the student belongs to: introverted or extroverted. It is supposedthat introverted students do not like to participate in classes even if they know a lot of things. While extroverted do participate a lot, just because they are accustomed to be the center of attention. Moreover, there is another important factor which is motivation. Motivation is divided into extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. The first one is related to external motivation (teacher, audiovisualsmaterials, etc). The second one is related to internal motivations (our goals in life, better oral proficiency, etc)

Combining these two factors, type of personality and motivation, researchers will know the reasons why students do not participate, and the factors that influence on the students who do actively participate in classes. In that way, researchers will be able to propose teacherssome recommendations for them to know specifically which the circumstances why students do no t participate are and how to solve that phenomenon.

C. JUSTIFICATION

Class participation is a good indicator of the student’s motivation towards the subject and the application of good study skills. Also, it stimulates the brain to learn and interact with the educational environment.Class participation can help with concentration and absorption of important information and material. However, poorly managed participation can also lead to teacher frustration and student confusion and lack of development of oral proficiency.

Therefore, this research project will explain the reasons why students do not engage in class by using two theories: Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivationand The type of Personalities. It will determine if students participate either because they get motivated by their teachers, by themselves or because their personality.

Besides, this research project will provide useful information for teachers to make classroom participation more effective. The objective is to make sure that students are able to participate in class in ways that will help...
