Primera Generación (1946 - 1959)
Esta generación se caracteriza por el uso de tubos al vacío para conducir la electricidad. Las computadoras de esta generación eran muy grandes en tamaño y lentas al procesar datos. A causa de la gran cantidad de calor que emitían, se requería que siempre estuvieran en un lugar con mucha ventilación. Una vez que las computadoras de esta generacióncomenzaban un proceso, el mismo no podía ser interrumpido hasta que la computadora lo terminará por completo. Podían realizar 1,000 instrucciones por segundo. Entre las computadoras pertenecientes a esta generación están: la ENIAC y la UNIVAC, siendo estas las primeras computadoras comerciales.
