GUAPORE CRATON
Introducción
Hasta 1983, todos los mapas geológicos de Bolivia representaban el Cratón de Guaporé como una indefinida mancha roja, delimitada al oeste y sur por el borde de afloramientos proterozoicos, y al norte y este por la frontera con el Brasil. El esfuerzo realizado por BGS-GEOBOL durante los últimos 15 años, permite ahoracontar con una provincia geológica bien definida, y con el detalle de información necesaria para realizar una interpretación geológica correcta del Cratón de Guaporé y mejor aprovechamiento de sus recursos minerales.
Introduction
Up until 1983, all the geological maps of Bolivia represented the Guaporé Craton as an indefinite red blot, delimited to the west and south by the Proterozoicoutcrops border, and to the north and east by the Brazilian border. The efforts of BGS-GEOBOL during the last 15 years, gave place to a well defined geological province, and to the necessary detailed information to make a correct geological interpretation of the Guaporé Craton, and better use of its mineral resources.
El sector boliviano del Cratón de Guaporé representa tan sólo el bordeoccidental del protolito cratónico de Sudamérica, conocido como el Escudo Central Brasilero. La historia geológica de esta provincia muestra una complejidad de eventos metamórficos, ígneos y tectónicos, que finalmente hoy es interpretada y cronoló-gicamente ordenada.
In the Bolivian portion of the Guaporé Craton, it represent only the western border of the South American cratonic protolith, knownas the Central Brazilian Shield. The geological history of this unit displays complex metamorphic, igneous and tectonic events, which are finally interpreted and chronologically arranged today.
En la actualidad, y desde el punto de vista geomorfológico, la región puede ser considerada como un glacis de erosión, con alturas variables de 700 a 400 m.s.n.m., o como una penillanura lateríticaformada a fines del Terciario y sobrepuesta a toda la secuencia proterozoica. Sobresaliendo a este glacis, se presenta una serie de serranías de rumbo general NW-SE y WNW-ESE, como las de Ricardo Franco y San Simón en el norte, y Sunsás, Santo Corazón y La Cal, entre otras, en la parte meridional, formadas por rocas sedimentarias y metasedimentarias, afectadas por diferentes eventos orogénicos. Enalgunos sectores sólo es posible observar afloramientos de rocas precámbricas en pequeños cortes de algunos ríos y en esporádicos inselberg o cerros isla, debido a la cubierta vegetal y paleosuelos.
At present, and from the geomorphological point of view, the region can be considered as an erosion glacis, with variable heights ranging between 700 and 400 masm, or as a lateritic peneplain formedtowards the end of the Tertiary and overlying the entire Proterozoic sequence. Sticking out from this glacis are a series of ridges with general NW-SE and WNW-ESE trend, such as the Ricardo Franco and San Simón ridges, to the north, and the Sunsás, Santo Corazón and La Cal ranges, among others, in the meridional part. These ridges are made up by sedimentary and metasedi-mentary rocks that wereaffected by different orogenic events. Due to the plant cover and the paleosoils, in some sectors, only the Pre-Cambrian rock outcrops can be seen in small cuts in some of the rivers and in sporadic inselbergs or island hills.
En el borde meridional del Cratón de Guaporé, se desarrollan sobre las rocas proterozoicas, otras serranías de rumbo WNW-ESE, denominadas Sierras Chiquitanas, constituidaspor secuencias paleozoicas y mesozoicas. Estas serranías, si bien están estrecha-mente relacionadas al cratón, forman parte, junto con la llanura adyacente, de la provincia geológica Sierras y Llanura Chiquitana, que es desarrollada en el Capítulo 6.
