INTRODUCTIONEvaluating material usefulness for a course is a meticulous work every English teacher has to be concerned with. The material and resources make part of an integrated group of elements involve in the EFL teaching-learning process. So, they play an important role and their selection has to obey a series of steps and criteria that help the teacher to take the best decision in their selection.Considering appropriateness or relevance of a determined material for being used in a course it is necessary to bear in mind several aspects related to the curriculum and course design such as the approach, method it is based on, the theoretical framework that has influenced that curricular design, type of syllabus adopted according to the theoretical framework that supports it, etc.

On theother hand, evaluating the material requires not only taking into account everything concerned to educational paradigms, approaches and methods that frame the curriculum adopted by the course, but also the learners needs which determine in a great measure the goals and objectives of the course.

The aim of the following assignment is to study the materials from You! bearing the points expressedpreviously and prepare a report evaluating the usefulness of this course in a particular teaching context, what changes would be involved if it were adopted?, and how would be recommended to implement such changes?

The report has been done taking into account specific characteristics presented in the course book You! in comparison with those which characterize the learning process andpedagogical experiences of sixth graders from the school Institución Educativa Distrital Las Flores located in Barranquilla-Colombia. To present it, the material was evaluated first following Brian Tomlinson’s 12 points procedure presented in his text “Developing criteria for evaluating L2 materials”. IATEFL Issues, Feb.1988, pp. 10-13.



Assignment:


The following report presents theresults of an evaluation and analysis of the materials from the course book You! which include the introduction to the Teacher’s Book, the content pages, and the tenth unit of the Student’s Book. It was done in order to consider the usefulness of this material to be used as the next course book for the English classes of sixth graders in the school Institución Educativa Distrital Las Flores located inBarranquilla-Colombia.

The evaluation of materials

The general objective of this evaluation was to determine if this material would be adequate to work with the four groups of sixth graders aged between 11 and 15 years old in the School Institución Educativa Distrital Las Flores in Barranquilla-Colombia.
