Death Analysis Thomas Nagel
In the common sense, death is the cessation oflife, so it is something that happens within life that marks its end. To be closed in this definition would not allow us to go further about what is the sense of death and what is the sense of being.Everyone dies, but not everyone can agree on what is the true meaning of death. Some people believe that they are able to surpass the death of their physical body by resurrecting in spirit and moving onto heaven, or death. They might also believe that their spirits can go somewhere and become souls of the purgatory or that their spirit will be reborn again in a different body as part ofreincarnation. For these people, death is not the end of their world. They still have the possibility of experiencing things.
Others, like Nagel, believe that death means the absolute end. There is nothing moreafter death, it’s like a switch, now you are here, and then you are fully gone. For these people, death can either be good or be bad.
Nagel does not seem to see death as a negative thing. He posesmany arguments defending his point of view. Nagel refers to death as a period of non-existence. He criticizes those who view their own death by referring to the period before birth. When we are born,we mark our beginning. But to mark a begging means that there was nothing before that. So how is it that someone can see death as a something bad but might not have the same feelings towards hisnon-existence before birth. To Nagel, death is exactly that. So if one views death bad, then whatever happened before birth is negative also.
