Description of New York
The City of New York is located on the eastern coast of the United States about 1000 miles north of Florida and 200 miles south of Boston. It is at the mouth of the HudsonRiver and is divided into five districts or neighborhoods. Long Island is east of the City of New York and New Jersey is just across the Hudson River to the west. The "Big Apple", as it is often called,is the largest city in the United States, with more than 7 million residents. It is filled with a diverse mix of people, including immigrants from many countries. Some neighborhoods, such asChinatown, Little Italy and Spanish Harlem reflect the rich cultural heritage of the native lands of its residents.
The neighborhood of Manhattan, the commercial and business center of the City of New York,is located on a large island in the middle of the Hudson River. Just south of it, across the main harbor, is the neighborhood of Staten Island, a large residential community. Crossing the Hudson eastarm, the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, on the western end of Long Island. The Bronx neighborhood is on the mainland, in the north. New Jersey is to the west, across the Hudson.

Brooklyn isacross the East River at the southwestern tip of Long Island. Is accessible via a bridge or tunnel. This neighborhood is almost four times larger than the island of Manhattan and has a population of fourmillion. It is one of the bedroom communities of the most important residential New York City. Unlike Manhattan, in Brooklyn there are few tall buildings. Generally, tree-lined streets are lined withhouses and small apartment buildings. There are very few hotels in Brooklyn, but few offer a quiet alternative to the noisy streets of Manhattan. The beach and the Amusement Park Coney Island is at thesouthern end of the beach, and the airport John F. Kennedy is in eastern Brooklyn.
