Abstract—Two gigantic enterprisesin the chip market world are
now competing directly by attacking each other’s stronghold. We
summarize now the possibilities of ARM and Intel to succeed in
this campaign, based on the limitations and potentials of their
technology, we are going to explain the main differences and
similitudes between each technology.

INTRODUCTION

Intel is a world known enterprise that found its stronghold
in microprocessors for computers and laptops. Nowadays the
x86 series of microprocessors, developed by Intel, is the most
common microprocessor in personal computers [1]. On the
other hand, ARM Holdings is the market dominant in the
mobile phone chips [2]. ARM works with a 32-bit Reduced
Instruction SetComputing (RISC) design [3][4].
Currently, Intel is trying to make a breakthrough in the
mobile phones area with the Atom processor, challenging the
wide dominancy of ARM technologies in this area [5] [6]. This
interest of Intel responds to the increasing market of
smartphones, market that may outsell PCs and laptops [4]. The
collision between Atom and ARM’s technology is now
unavoidable, but which technology offers the most to the users?

graphics offering real time solutions e.g. traffic information in
a GPS. The ATOM is thought about as a small and less-power
processor and is designed to offer more capabilities than laptop
and PC chips [4]. The Atom processor also supports the
SpeedStep Technology that adjusts the processorvoltage and
frequency for low power consumption and to satisfy
applications’ needs.
With the ATOM, Intel proposes to have a single chip to
perform different tasks instead of requiring of several chips.
This is something that Intel keeps doing in its PCs and laptops
since Intel integrates as many functions as possible in a chip.
Using x86-based processors is an advantage that Intel plansto use as a tool to attract customers since it would provide a
desktop-like experience just as in their Windows OS.
The Atom contains 47 million transistors and it is currently
the smallest processor in Intel’s history. The processor can
work up to 1.86 GHz and may deliver between 4 to 6 hours of
battery in constant use.

Intel Corporation (Short of Integrated Electronics) is an
American firm that is dedicated to the semiconductor chip
development. Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore founded Intel
in 1968, headquartered in Santa Clara, California. They call
themselves as the inventors as the x86 architecture, processor
found in most of nowadays computers. This company in the
90’s had a huge invest for new microprocessor that was built
almost every computer, all of this was preceded with
aggressive and even illegal campaigns against another brands,
especially with AMD. Between its contributions there is the
development of SRAM andDRAM.
B. The Atom processor
Intel’s Centrino Atom processor has the target to provide
PC-like functionality. The Atom supports video, audio and 3D

C. Interests on the mobile phone market
Intel interest in the smartphone markets is based on the fact
that the cellphone market has grown quickly. 1.12 billion
mobile phones were sold in 2007, more than twice than in 2002
and more than 4 times...
