Juan de Onate
Today we are going to learn about one of Mexico’s most appraised explorers, Juan de Onate. He was able to led andexpedition deep into the unknown land of the United States. This made him really famous among other explorers in Mexico. Many different statues and schools on his name were built in his name. But now,we are going to learn the true reason why he became so famous in Mexico. His expeditions and life, are the main topic we are going to cover today.
Don Juan de Onate y Salazar was born in the year1550 in Mexico. His hometown was the New Spain city of Zacatecas, were his family were mainly gold and silver miners. His ancestor fought in a very important battle, which made his family granted witha coat of arms. He was therefore known as ‘The Cadenas’. What made him interested in colonization was his wife, Isabel de Tolosa Cortes de Moctezuma. His wife was granddaughter of Hernan Cortes, andgreat granddaughter of Emperor Moctezuma.
At the year 1595, King Philip 2 sent a message to Onate, stating him that he was allowed to go into an expedition deep into the Great Plains. Onate withouthesitating accepted the deal. He took 130 Spanish soldiers with him, and 12 priests to transform all natives to Roman Catholic, and to settle mission at new lands. He began his expedition and 1598,at the Rio Grande, going all the way west unto the Oklahoma River. During his journey, he discovered a group of Indians called the Escanjaques, which later became hostile. Onate was the first explorerto discover plain land prairies. He became in war with the Escanjaques due to him capturing Indians for trying to convert religions.
After a while fighting the Escanjaques, Onate decided to retreatfrom the area, due to him having a really small army. But, he took some Indians to use as proof his mission went at least good. He took a trip to Spain, and talked to King Phillip about the...
