Effects of Cocaine on Mesolimbic Dopamine System
This article named “Molecular mechanisms of cocaine reward: Combined dopamine and serotonin transporter knockouts eliminate cocaine place preference”asserts that cocaine blocks uptake by neuron membrane transporters for dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Cocaine reward and reinforcement has been linked to actions at dopamine or to blockingof serotonin. However, sensations of dopamine, serotonin, or norepinephrine reduce cocaine reward and reinforcement, leaving uncertainty about cocaine's molecular mechanisms for reward. It might bepossible that the molecular bases of cocaine reward might display sufficient redundancy that either dopamine or serotonin might be able to mediate cocaine reward in the other's absence. To test thishypothesis, the study examines double sensitized mice with removals of one or both copies of the dopamine and serotonin genes.
Recognizably, cocaine is used and abused as a drug for the effectsproduced by it. Typically the effects, or high of cocaine, are expressed through feelings of exhilaration and euphoria, alertness, high energy, enhanced self-confidence, and diminished fatigue. Cocaine canalso increase aggressive behavior, sexual interest and performance under cocaine’s influence. The involvement of DA further causes other unintended effects, particularly in the brain region. Most ofthese effects when dopamine is present are behavioral and include increased motor behavior, stereotyped behavior, reinforcement of cocaine’s natural effects, and decreased response for all thesementioned.
Under the studies performed by these experts, mice displayed viability, weight gain, histologic features, neurochemical parameters, and baseline behavioral features that allow tests of cocaineinfluences (Sora, et. al, 2001).
