SODIS, an acronym for this program designed for water disinfection in Switzerland, is used worldwide to provide drinking water to about four millionpeople. "It's simple, free and effective," says Ibelatha Mhelela, director Ndolela primary school in Tanzania. In 2006, the school began using SODIS todisinfect tap water contaminated by placing bottles in corrugated metal roof of the building. Result? Absenteeism due to diarrhea fell considerably, while testscores increased significantly. "Before using SODIS, only 10 to 15% of children approved national examinations for sixth grade," says Mhelela. Use transparent PET bottles instead of glass bottles. Studies show that PET water heated by the sun is safe to drink.
Donot touch the bottles while under the sun.
