ELLIPSIS

YOU CAN LEAVE OUT WORDS TO AVOID REPETITION, OR WHEN THE
MEANING CAN BE UNDERSTOOD WITHOUT THEM. IT’S VERY COMMOM
IN SPOKEN ENGLISH.
YOU CAN AVOID REPEATING A COMPLETE VERB PHRASEBY USING
JUST THE AUXILIARY OR MODAL VERB.

eXamples:

* Pat likes rock music and so do I.

- “We couldn’t have got there earlier.” - “I think we could.”

* “He likes watchingsoap operas.” - “ Does he?”

* My partner hasn’t got a dog but I have.

YOU USE ELLIPSIS :

1) In short taganswers beginning with so, neither, nor.
Ex: A: “I didn’t see Ann.”
B: “Neither did I”

2) After an auxiliary or a modal . You can leave out the verb phrase. If there’s noauxiliary, you use do/does/did
Ex: “Bill can’t swim, but his sister can.”
“Peter enjoyed the film but I didn’t.”

3) In short reply questions. You use a positive question after a positivestatement and a negative question after a negative statement.
Ex: A:“They play tennis every day.” B:“ Do they?”
A:“ He didn’t see that film. B:“Didn’t he?”

4) In short answers.
Ex: A:“Have you read that book?” B:“Not yet”

5) In sentences where the verb would be repeated in the infinitive form.
You can leave out the infinitive and you use to.
Ex: I’ve neverheard him sing, but I’d like to.
I never play basketball now, but I used to.

1 A: I didn’t know what to watch on Tv last night.
B: Neither ___ I.
2 I prefer to listen tothe radio and so ____ my wife.
3 A:I can really relax when the kids have gone to bed.
B: I’m afraid I ___
4 Sam and Mary don’t have a computer and neither ___ Jill....
