ELLIPSIS

YOU CAN LEAVE OUT WORDS TO AVOID REPETITION, OR WHEN THE
MEANING CAN BE UNDERSTOOD WITHOUT THEM. IT’S VERY COMMOM
IN SPOKEN ENGLISH.
YOU CAN AVOID REPEATING A COMPLETE VERB PHRASEBY USING
JUST THE AUXILIARY OR MODAL VERB.

eXamples:

* Pat likes rock music and so do I.

- “We couldn’t have got there earlier.” - “I think we could.”

* “He likes watchingsoap operas.” - “ Does he?”

* My partner hasn’t got a dog but I have.

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." (Plato)"Prosperity is a great teacher; adversity a greater."
(William Hazlitt)

"Some people go to priests; others to poetry; I to my friends."
(Virginia Woolf)

3) In short reply questions. You use a positive question after a positivestatement and a negative question after a negative statement.

A:“ He didn’t see that film. B:“Didn’t he?”

4) In short answers.
