Portfolio Activity: The Language Passport
-------------------------------------------------
What is the European Language Portfolio?-------------------------------------------------
The European Language Portfolio (ELP) is a document in which those who are learning or have learned a language – whether at school or outside school – canreflect on and record their language-learning and intercultural experiences.
-------------------------------------------------
The ELP was developed and piloted by the Language Policy Division of theCouncil of Europe, Strasbourg, from 1998 until 2000. In October 2000, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education of the Council of Europe adopted a Resolution recommending the implementationand wide use of the ELP.
-------------------------------------------------
CILT, the National Centre for Languages, organised pilots of two versions of the ELP, one designed for vocational purposes, the other for primary school children. Validated versions of both Portfolios were published in 2001. Both versions were updated in 2006.
-------------------------------------------------
The launchof the ELP took place across Europe during 2001, the European Year of Languages. By early 2004, 31 of the 45 member states of the Council of Europe, including all the larger ones, were somehowengaged in developing, piloting or implementing an ELP for learners of all ages, from those in primary schools to those in vocational education and universities.-------------------------------------------------
