Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. Schizophrenia consists of three stages, prodromal stage, acute stage and residual stage. As Michael Bengston says “the term prodromalis derived from the Greek word prodromal; meaning “something that comes before and signals an event”. In medical terms, a prodromal refers to the early symptoms and signs of an illness that come before the characteristic symptoms appear.” I mean it refers to the year before the illness is going to appear. But this phase does not specify that schizophrenia is developing, that is not until theacute or active phase. In this phase the victim isolates themselves, lost interest and motivation, change in attitude and their emotions changes, it could be confuse with depression. It is going to be difficult for the family of the patient to identify the illness, as said earlier it could be confuse with depression or also a change of mood. To make it a bit easier they should bring a lot ofattention to the attitudes and actions of the patient.
Once the patient experienced hallucinations, delusions or grossly disorganized behaviour the acute or also name active stage have started developing. In this phase the victim phases medical attention. The person would be observed and disputed with the goal of knowing when the behaviour did begin and how much time it has lasted. Also most ofthe patients in this phase are medicated to reduce, alleviate, eliminate symptoms and to ease the questioning, patients who are very psychotic are difficult to interview. The final stage is known as Residual Stage. This phase occurs when an individual with schizophrenia has stabilized and is on a consistent treatment plan for schizophrenia. . As Michael Bengston says “the features of the residualphase are very similar to the prodromal stage. Patients in this stage do not appear psychotic but may experience some negative symptoms such as lack of emotional expression or low energy. ” In this stage the symptoms of the illness have disappeared, but there is a possibility that the patient continue acting strangely. Psychosis can also be induced by drugs. They are not limited to illegal drugs;legitimately prescribed medications can have the same side effect if they are use incorrectly or simply because they have side effects that cause allusions.
On the other hand if you use illegal drugs chemical changes and alterations may occur in your system provoking changes that provoke psychotic attitudes. Vancomycin and Morphine are examples of medicated drugs that can cause psychoticattitude and some of the illegal drugs are, speed, LSD, marijuana, ecstasy, alcohol or magic mushrooms. The symptoms of these both legal and illegal drugs include delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, depression, confusion, and sporadic changes in behaviour, aggressive behaviours, hyperactivity, and irritability may also occur. The symptoms of the drug induce psychosis will last last until theeffects of the drugs wear off; this could be a few hours as it could also be days. The treatment of this type of psychosis is based on stopping the use of the drug, if it is necessary hospitalization or pharmacological intervention can be required. A brief reactive psychosis is another way in which psychosis could manifest. It is a sudden, short/term display of psychotic behaviour, such as...
