PHILOSOPHY OF A BEGGINER TEACHER
Being teachers is one of the most difficult jobs in our country. Your main responsibility is to teach but also you have to deal with students, parent and school system. If this is a hard work, why we have a lot of teachers? The answer is simple, to teach is synonymous of knowledge and knowledge is a way that you can open your mind and to see beyond than the restof the people.
As a future teacher we have to know what our beliefs are and what we want to give to our students. These beliefs come from teachers that passed during our live or in our VISE experiences. We have two options, to do the same things that the teacher did in that time or to learn about what are the things that a teacher doesn’t have to do. In my case, my beliefs come from differentpositive experiences that I had with teachers, especially how was their attitude to students. They were confident, comprehensive and they always have the availability to listen to. Sometimes students think that teachers are immortal; it means that you don’t make a mistake, you know everything and the most common thought: you don’t have a social life.
We decide if we want to be a simple teacher oragent of change. To be agent of change is very difficult considering the educational system in our country. Our students, in case of English class, are used to learn just grammar, translate songs or short texts.
The Minister gives them a text book with difficult exercises, a little bit boring, confused and out of cultural context. The results of these is that the students don’t pay attention anddon’t feel motivate. Here is when teachers of English have to make a change. They have to add extra material from the internet or another textbook, that motive the students and at the same time to make a significant learning. The main problem of this is that teachers spend a lot of time preparing their class and unfortunately nobody pays you for that. Another problem that we can find beingteacher is when you have all intention to change the system but if your students don’t want to change, what you can do? First of all, never give up. Our beliefs have to be clear and always follow it. Sometimes it just takes time. We have to know our students, their realities and what is their background. We can’t think that all of them are the same. One of the principles of a teacher is to know thatall the students are different including, thoughts and learning styles. For this reason teachers have to do different kind of activities in order that all the students can learn in different ways. If we have the opportunities to use resources as a radio, TV or Data base, we just have to use it because nowadays is a good way to motive our students.
My beliefs about teaching are to try involving allthe things mention before. I studied in a period when we didn’t have many resources and grammar was the most important material. It is important to mention that before of the generation of nowadays, students took serious to go to school and have good grades. Today students go to school because their parents want to that. They don´t think about future and less in growing as a person, they justlive. Also we have to consider that the problem of all of these most of the time starts at home, especially with parents. And what can you do about it? To change the system, involve parents in their children education, that the students feel that their parents are committed with them. These problems are in terms of students, but what happened with our reality as a country? We can forget that if wewant to work in a public school, we have to deal with amount of 40 students.
In certain way, the amount of students is one of the important factors to make a good class. As Renaud said, the major challenges of teaching are when we have a large class and this is part of our reality, especially in public schools. According to a study cited by Ur (1996), the average perception
