Big Mama´s Funeral
“Big Mama´s Funeral” a story written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez who also wrote novels like One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time ofCholera was born on 1927 in Colombia. Gabriel Garcia Marquez bring to us “Big Mama´s Funeral”, a story full of a literature term that some Latin American writers use to create a dreamlike atmosphere ina story but also keeping it real called Magic realism. In this story we can see the life and in some point the death of a powerful character known as Big mama. “Big Mama, who until she was fiftyrejected the most passionate suitors, and who was well enough endowed by nature to suckle her whole issue all by herself…” (Page 189).
Big Mama is the name that Maria Del Rosario Castañeda y Montero tookafter her father’s funeral at the age of twenty two. Known to be ruler of almost all Macondo “No one knew the origin, or the limits or the real value of her estate, but everyone was used to believingthat Big Mama was the owner of the waters, running and still, of rain and drought and of the districts’ roads, telegraph poles, leap years and heat waves.” (Page 186) and also a woman as huge as onlyMarquez can describe. “Big Mama raised herself up on her monumental buttocks” (Page 192). Both of these quotations express the term magic realism in a huge way.
