Equilibrium cycles
Textbook pg 714 to 719
Sustainable cycle - a cycle that is balanced or in equilibrium and is renewed. The cycle continues.
Unsustainable cycle - a cycle that isimbalanced or in disequilibrium and is not renewed. The cycle stops.
By knowing the opposites of the cycles, determine how a cycle is balanced (in equilibrium) and imbalanced (in disequilibrium).WATER CYCLE
1. Describe the two opposite parts of the water cycle?
Water evaporates from ocean, lakes, soil. Evaporation is from liquid to gas.
Clouds are formedthrough condensation and release precipitation (rain). Condensation is from gas to liquid.
2. How is balanced kept in the water cycle? (the opposites are equal)
3. How isimbalanced made in the water cycle? (one opposite pole is greater than the other opposite pole)
NITROGEN CYCLE
4. Describe the two opposite parts of the nitrogen cycle?Nitrification is opposite of denitrification.
Nitrification:
Nitrogen gas and ammonium ions changed to nitrate with bacteria.
Denitrification:Nitrate changes to nitrogen gas with bacteria.
5. How is balanced kept in the nitrogen cycle?
6. How is imbalanced made in the nitrogen cycle?
CARBON CYCLE
7.Describe the two opposite parts of the carbon cycle?
Photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Cell respiration returns carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
8. How isbalanced kept in the carbon cycle?
9. How is imbalanced made in the carbon cycle?
OXYGEN CYCLE
10. Describe the two opposites part of the oxygen cycle?
Cellular respirationremoves oxygen from the atmosphere.
Photosynthesis returns oxygen to the atmosphere.
11. How is balanced kept in the oxygen cycle?
12. How is imbalanced made in the oxygen cycle?
