As I stand in the mirror, I see whom I don’t want to see. Why can’t I be like them? Why can’t I have the perfect body, the perfect face, the perfect personality? Why is it that when I see myself I amdisgusted with my reflection? This cannot be who I really am; I calm myself and say “It’s just a matter of a few modifications, we’ll change this, I promise”
For over centuries, stereotypes haveaffected our society, specially our teenagers. The Webster’s Dictionary defines a stereotype as a way that society perceives that all people or things have a particular characteristic. In every form ofcommunication we are constantly reminded of what the society demands of us, perfection. This search for perfection has driven us to madness, suicide rates have gone up thanks to this. According to thenewest investigations of reasons to commit suicide, inconformity with physical appearances takes the 35% of the charts. Teenagers are bullied at school because they are fat, because they have zits,because they are simply not what the rest of the people expect of them.
As we grow up, we start to realize that this perfection is simply fantasy; there is no such thing as being perfect. Perfectionis what sells, the media photo shops or modifies their models because that is what the people want to see. A simple example, if you see a cute model with the hot body selling clothes, you are moreattracted to buying them than you would be if you saw an ugly and fat guy.
Stereotypes not only lead us to seek physical perfection, they also invite us to practice a series of conducts that are notnecessarily always seeking our well-being or making us better persons. They say it’s okay to lie, to cheat, to criticize your best friends, to be involved with boys that are not even your boyfriend orfriend. In most movies, people by the age of eighteen no longer see their parents, no longer live with them, no longer care about them; they have forgotten the people who are supposed to mean the most...
