Reading Response One
In “College Pressure” by writer William Zinsser, he talks about how students live under pressure andstruggle in their dream of obtaining a perfect curriculum that will secure their future. Zinsser wishes to students to have an enriched learning experience that they will enjoy and not another reason to feelstress and worried, Zinsser states “What I wish for all students is some release from the clammy grip of the future. I wish them a chance to savor each segment of their education as an experience initself and not as a grim preparation for the next step…” (Zinsser 451) Also Zinsser claims that students push themselves too much; he complains that students do more than they are expected to do.Zinsser tries to remind them that “The road ahead is a long one and that it will have more unexpected turns that they think. There will be plenty of time to change jobs, change careers, change wholeattitude and approaches.” (Zinsser 451) What Zinsser means is that students shouldn’t live in fear of failing but take a chance and stopping being prisoners of their parents dream and their classmates. Inshort Zinsser says that “They must be jolted into believing in themselves as unique men and women who have the power to shape their own future.” (Zinsser 455) Zinsser express that his wish for hisstudents is naive, they are more worried about getting more terms done with excellent grades than they own happiness.
In my opinion Zinsser view of college students is correct in many ways, like theconstant pressure students have, the brutal economy many students must affront with a part-time job to pay their classes, and especially in Zinsser view, “How one appears on paper is more important thanhow one appears in person.” (Zinsser 452) It is a simple fact, which is the way supervisors in a company will be looking at you, when you are applying for a job.
