Put out the candles behind solid objects










With this simple experimentwe want to test if we can put out a candle which is behind different solid objects. In this case we are going to test with two objects: a bottle and a box.

HYPOTHESIS

Depending of the shapeof different solid objects, we´ll be able to put out the light of a candle or not.

Constant Variables: a candle, distance between the candle and the different objects.
Dependent Variable: theair.
Independent Variables: the solid object (a bottle and a matchbox).

PREDICTION

What will happen to the light of the candle when we change the solid object?

Our prediction is that with thebottle we´ll be able to put out the candle but not with the box.

MATERIALS

A candle
A matchbox
A bottle

PROCEDURE

First we light the candle with a lighter.
Next we put the box (e.g.this matchbox) in front of the candle.
Then we blow the box and we observe if we can put out the candle.
After that we change the object. Instead to use a box, now we are going to use a bottle andwe observe if in this case we can put out the candle.

RESULTS

We could put out the candle blowing the bottle, but we couldn´t do it with the matchbox.

Our prediction was confirmed and thehypothesis is valid, because has happened what we predicted.


CONCLUSIONS

1. When we blow the box, the air has to change direction and continue until it hits the sharp corner of the box. Inthis point the air tends to separate from the surface of the box to the sides.





















2. However when we blow the bottle the air tends to continue the surface, andthe curves of the bottle. This is called the COANDA EFFECT. This way the curves of air go all around the bottle until they join together on the other side of the bottle and put out the candle....
