The French Revolution (1789) and other liberal-bourgeois revolution aspired to achieve legal equality and political rights and freedoms.

These freedoms, rights and legal equality that hadbeen the great achievements of the liberal revolutions did not affect women. "Rights of Man and Citizen" that proclaimed the French Revolution referred exclusively to "man" not to all human beings.Since that time, in Western Europe and North America started a movement, feminism, who fought for women's equality and liberation. During that period, the main objective of this movement was to have thepossibility to vote. Thus was born the suffrage movement.

As a consequence of the political, social and economic changes produced by the "Second Industrial Revolution", the feminist movementstarted to grow more quick in the last third of the nineteenth century.
