Funeral for a Friend

Funeral for a Friend is a band from Bridgend who formed in 2001.
When Michael Davies, one of January Thirst's original vocalists, quit in December 2001, Matthew Evans (vocals) and Johnny Phillips (drums) invited Matt Davies (later Davies-Kreye) to try out for the vacated singer position. Soon afterward, the band reformed as Funeral for a Friend; the name is derived from asong by Planes Mistaken for Stars, one of Davies' favourite bands at the time.

History
Dear friends of this academy
oh Romeo is bleeding to death
To see a friend bleed to death, what for
Some kind of metaphor that I cant see?
So I'll drink until I see it.

This sky will make me sick
So I'll give up on you
I'll give up on this
This sky will make me sick
So I'll give up on this
I'llgive up on you

Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine

So you want to hold me up and bring me down
Yes, you want to hold me up and break me down
I don't care for your sweet scent
Or the way you want me more than I want you
and I don't care for your sweet scent
Or the way you want me more than I want you

Archersin your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine

Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine..

It's all mine...
It's all mine...
It's all mine...

Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine...Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for one last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine...

Description of video
The main protagonist of the music video is a British mine worker who fights alongside his fellow mine workers against the police during a strike, ultimately getting arrested. The band is shown playing in the midst of the battle between the miners and thepolice. At the end of the video, the miner is shown eating breakfast with his young son and wife (presumably on the morning before the battle). Most of the video was shot in black and white; however, the end of the video was shot in colour.

The principal meaning of video.
The UK miners' strike was a major industrial action affecting the British coal industry. It was a defining moment inBritish industrial relations, and its defeat significantly weakened the British trade union movement. It was also seen as a major political victory for Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party. The strike became a symbolic struggle, since the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) was one of the strongest unions in the country, viewed by many, including Conservatives in power, as having brought downthe Heath government in the union's 1974 strike. The later strike ended with the miners' defeat and the Thatcher government able to consolidate its fiscally conservative program. The political power of the NUM was broken permanently. Ten deaths resulted from events around the strike: six picketers, three teenagers searching for coal, and a taxi driver taking a non-striking miner to work.

Hey there, thought I would add my thoughts on what I think History is about.

In interviews Matt has talked about his rough times with alcohol and I think the song is about that and then about the way he stopped being so dependant on alcohol. Saying lines like "ill give up on you, ill give up on this" meaning he wants to stop drinking and "this sky will make me sick" probablymeaning that he would be sick after drinking so much, the bit that says "you want to hold me up and bring me down" means that when he was drunk he was on a high and that but then the alcohol would bring him down. The last verse probably means that alcohol is sweet smelling and in the end beer wants you more than you want it.

Not sure if that makes sense but anyway i think its about Matt's bad...
