Critical Analysis Proposal
I plan to examine Flannery O‘Connor‘s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. I am interested inexploring the topic of “personal morals” as it relates to O’Connor’s protagonist, the grandmother, and antagonist, the misfit. In Flannery O’ Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” O’ Conneruses southern dialogue and an honest tone to describe the deadly end to a family’s vacation . Though “A Good Man is Hard to Find” provides evidence of being set in an earlier time,O’Connor’s ability to create complex moral codes for each character brings this story to a higher and timeless level.
It is through the grandmother that O’Connor innocently drops powerfulforeshadowing sentences such as “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady” (450). It is clear that the grandmother’s moral codeplaces a lot significance on the word ‘good’ and being a lady. The misfit’s moral code is simple; no matter what crime you commit, the punishment will outweigh it. My paper will provideevidence as to whose moral code is more consistent. As well as moral codes my paper will also explore O’Connor’s usage of symbols such as, the hat, the monkey and the father’s shirt.Works Cited
