Fog Catchers

Report

For this project we had to research about what the fog catchers are. First we had to find a diagram of a fog catcher in order to base the model on that diagram. Then we tried looking forwho invented this, but since it might have started to be used 1000 years ago, there is not one actual inventor, but we could say that the people who brought this technique were Kai Tiedemann and AnneLummerich. We found out that, here, in Peru this invention is very useful. One of the strengths our group had was that we divided our work since the beginning and a weakness was that, at first we didn’tknow how we would do the model.

Lima is a very foggy city in Peru and it is predicted to run out of water in less than 10 years. These fog catchers in a foggy day can make up more or less 150gallons of water just in that day. This water can be stored and saved. If there are more of these fog catchers the country may depend on this as a water supply. Now water is what we and the world needand maybe there will be wars for this. This can work better for the country depending on nature as it is what these people depend now, not every day there is fog so they have to store this water, is notthat easy for the whole Lima to depend on this as maybe we can have water for one or two days but this won’t work for a long time for the country. We have to start looking for alternative sources ofwater, this people had found this maybe we can find something else more efficient and that happens commonly.

What now is predicted for the fog catchers is that people want to double or triple thecurrent amount of water collected to 24-36 million liters per year. Part of the water will be used for human consumption, while the rest will be left to nurture the vegetation in the area beingrestored. Project leaders hope the efforts will enable the forest to reach its peak state. This water needs to be stored for this people as this is the only water supply they have for living and farming...
