Ambato earthquake of August 5, 1949 was the largest quake in the Western Hemisphere in more than five years . That August 5 , an earthquake hit the province of Tungurahua in Ecuador , southeast ofthe capital , Ambato , killing 5,050 people. It had a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale seismological , resulting in a hypocenter at 40 km under the bark . The 1949 earthquake inAmbato, initially followed a junction of several northwest-southeast faults in the Inter-Andean Valley , which were created by the subduction of the Carnegie ridge .
