En 1968,después del divorcio de John Lennon y su esposa Cynthia Powell por culpa de la aventura amorosa de Lennon con Yoko Ono , McCartney fue a ver a Cynthia y a su hijo en común con Lennon, Julian. Paul diríade aquello: «Hemos sido buenos amigos durante muchísimos años y creo que es excesivo considerarlos personæ non gratæ y sacarlos de mi vida».Cynthia recordó: «Me sorprendí totalmente cuando, una tarde,Paul llegó por su cuenta. Estaba conmovida por su preocupación acerca de nuestro bienestar [...] En el camino hacia aquí compuso 'Hey Jude' en el automóvil. Nunca olvidaré el detalle de Paul depreocuparse por venir a vernos».
El título original era «Hey Jules», y tenía la intención de consolar a Julian del dolor causado por el divorcio de sus padres. «Comencé con la idea de 'Hey Jules', queera Julian, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better (no lo estropees, toma una canción triste y mejórala). ¡Hey, trata de lidiar con esa terrible situación! Sabía que no iba a ser fácil...
